Rust Caused Sunoco Gas Station Canopy To Collapse

Syracuse, N.Y. - We are learning more about that canopy collapse at a Sunoco gas station on East Taft Road...

Rust is being blamed for the collapse. According to the Town of Cicero Director of Code Enforcement, the amount of rust at the base of the canopy was severe enough that combined with the wind and snow, the structure gave way.

Around 2:30 in the afternoon on Wednesday, the canopy above the gas station pumps collapsed crushing 2 cars, but luckily no one was hurt.

Going forward, the owner of the gas station will have to apply for a building permit and submit new plans for construction, which must be approved by the town to replace the canopy.
