Red Flag Laws Now In Place In New York

Albany, N.Y. - New York's so-called Red Flag gun law is now in effect.

The law was signed by Governor Cuomo in February and prevents people who show signs of being an "extreme risk" to themselves or others from purchasing or possessing firearms.

It empowers teachers, law enforcement, and family members to pursue court intervention when they believe someone is a danger to themselves or others.

The law took effect Saturday.

Governor Cuomo calls it "a big step forward for common-sense gun safety".
