Syracuse, N.Y. -- A mother and her son are left homeless this morning after a fire ripped through their home.

It happened just before 8, on the corner of Pond and North Alvord Street.

When fire crews arrived there was heavy smoke and flames coming from the first floor. The mother and son were sitting outside, along with their dog.

Firefighters managed to knock down the flames in about 20 minutes.

The son was sent to the hospital for smoke inhalation, but is expected to be okay.

The home is totally destroyed. Officials say there were working smoke detectors.

The cause is still under investigation.
