Albany, N.Y. - Looks like pot will not become legal in New York....for now.
The primary sponsor of the bill to allow those 21 and older to possess and grow small amounts of of pot, conceded defeat this morning in a tweet. Sen. Liz Krueger, Manhattan Democrat, acknowledged there are no hopes to pass the law, this year.
Several sticking points caused the demise of the bill, such as allowing counties or larger cities to “opt out” or “opt in” allowing retail marijuana sales, how to ensure that revenues from sales be directed to minority communities, deemed most affected by drug law enforcement and how to enforce laws prohibiting driving while impaired by marijuana.
Gov Cuomo says he may now look at decriminalization of pot.
