Pope Appoints New Syracuse Bishop

Syracuse, N.Y. - Pope Francis is announcing who the new Bishop of the Syracuse Catholic Diocese will be.

The pope has appointed 56-year-old Douglas John Lucia. The Altona native comes to Syracuse from the Diocese of Ogdensburg. The date of his installation hasn't been determined.

Bishop Cunningham hit the mandatory retirement age last June. The Vatican has been searching for Syracuse's 11th Bishop ever since.

The Bishop and Bishop-Elect will celebrate the 12:10 p.m. mass at the Cathedral today.
