New Proposed Bill Could Make New York A Sanctuary State

Bronx, N.Y. - A New York State lawmaker wants to make New York a so-called sanctuary state.

Democratic Senator Jose Serrano Jr. of the Bronx is pushing the initiative.

He's drafted legislation that would ban police from deporting undocumented immigrants unless they are convicted for serious or violent crimes.

Serrano calls the legislation the "Dignity for Immigrants in New York State Act."

California and Connecticut have similar laws already on the books.

Republican Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis tells the New York Post the legislation is "misguided" and "dangerous."
