Long Time Syracuse Catholic Auxiliary Bishop Thomas Costello Has Died

Syracuse, N.Y. - The long-standing Auxiliary Bishop of the Catholic Diocese has died.

Camden native Thomas Costello became a priest in 1954 and ordained the auxiliary bishop in 1978. Prior to his 2004 retirement, he served under six of the diocese’s 10 bishops. For five years after that, he was Bishop Cunningham's assistant.

Diocese officials say that he passed away at the Francis House eight days short of his 90th birthday.

Funeral arrangements will be forthcoming.
