Albany, N.Y. - New York lawmakers have passed the so-called DREAM Act.
The legislation gives undocumented immigrants access to state financial assistance when applying for colleges. The measure passed with overwhelming support yesterday in the state Senate and Assembly.
Republicans in the Senate had blocked the legislation for several years. Democrats took control of the chamber at the start of the year.
Republicans argue that people who are unlawfully in the U.S. should not have access to state scholarships.
