Syracuse Police Use Tear Gas To End Armed Standoff On W. Onondaga St.

Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse Police used tear gas to end an armed standoff inside of an apartment building on West Onondaga near South Ave this morning.

Neighbors called 911 about midnight to say that a man was hanging out of an apartment window with a gun threatening to shoot people.

Syracuse Police Sergeant Rick Helterline says that negotiators spent hours trying to contact the man inside. "Our SWAT team got called to the scene. Probably around 6 a.m. they deployed a canister of tear gas. Two people came out. They're going to be questioned for any possible charges."

Officers say that they are allowing residents that had been evacuated to return to their homes.  Traffic is also moving through the area.
