Syracuse Diocese To Release Names Of Predator Priests

Syracuse, N.Y. - The Syracuse Catholic Diocese will be making available this morning a list of dozens of predator priests.

The list will contain the names of clergy credibly accused of sexually abusing a minor. The list contains allegations dating back to 1950. Many of the priests are dead.  There are no new allegations since the Diocese began working with local prosecutors to investigate sex abuse claims in 2015.

The policy reversal is a part of a national trend to disclose the names of abusive priests.

In September, the State Attorney General launched a probe into all eight dioceses in the state, seeking information about whether church officials knew about and covered up sexual abuse by clergy. It followed a similar investigation in Pennsylvania which uncovered sexual abuse by more than 300 priests along with rampant cover-ups by the Catholic Church.

Earlier this year, the dioceses began to offer financial compensation for damages to the victims of clergy sex abuse.

The list will be available at thecatholicsun.com and syrdio.org.
