Albany, N.Y. - About 100 of those 500 illegal blue signs that have become ubiquitous on the Thruway are staying up.
Officials say the process to take down the illegal signs is underway and that it will be complete by Thanksgiving.
Taxpayers paid $8 million dollars to put up the non-compliant I Love New York tourism signs. The large motherboards will stay up and the four follow-up signs are being taken down and relocated to places like service areas, welcome centers, and state parks.
The State took them down only after Federal Highway authorities threatened to stop sending $14 million in Federal highway funds.
