State Investigates Cases Of Polio-Like Illnesses

Albany, N.Y. - The state health department says it's investigating five potential cases of a disease that can cause polio-like symptoms in kids.

State Officials aren't saying where acute flaccid myelitis may have been found, but say all the possible illnesses have been outside New York City. Doctors at the Upstate Golisano Children's Hospital say they suspect they have treated at least one case of AFM.

More than 60 cases have already been confirmed in 22 states.

The CDC says symptoms include weakness or loss of muscle tone, trouble moving the eyes, slurred speech and difficulty swallowing.  If your child shows any signs of those problems, call their doctor immediately.
