New Veterans' Unit Opens At Jamesville Prison

Jamesville, N.Y. - Onondaga County Sheriff Gene Conway is announcing a new unit at the Jamesville Correctional Facility that will be exclusively for incarcerated veterans.

The goal is to identify inmates that are veterans and offer them support resources specifically focused on veteran needs. Services include mental health, substance abuse, housing,  and career counseling. Transitional services are also provided to help the formerly incarcerated veteran reintegrate into the community with the hope of reducing their rate of recidivism.

The prison has served an average of 12 inmates since it began operating the unit in April.  It can hold up to 16 inmates.

Partner agencies in the Veterans’ Housing Unit include the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs, Catholic Charities and Clear Path for Veterans.
