Challenger Rachel May has taken her race against incumbent State Sen. David Valesky to the wire.
She holds a lead in the 53rd State Senate District's Democratic primary election. However, the race is only separated by about 600 votes and with more than 15-hundred absentee ballots still, to be counted May hasn't declared victory and Velesky hasn't conceded.
Democrat voters angry about a group of State Senators that broke ranks and spent six years voting largely with Republicans showed up to the polls yesterday. Six of the eight IDC Democrats lost primaries last night, including IDC leader Jeff Klein. He was defeated by a more progressive candidate Alessandra Biaggi. Some are pointing to the ousting fo the Democrats that allowed Republicans to control the State Senate as evidence of a potential blue wave this November.
If Valesky loses the Democratic Party nomination he will remain on other party ballot lines this November. It is unclear if he will continue his re-election campaign.
