Primary Elections Tuesday

Primary elections are taking place today in New York for Congressional seats.   In Central New York, Syracuse University Professor Dana Balter and former Syracuse mayoral candidate Juanita Perez Williams are battling each other in the 24th Congressional Primary.  The spotlight will also be on Staten Island where Republican Michael Grimm is trying to take back the House seat he resigned from in 2014 after pleading guilty of tax evasion charges.  He's challenging Republican Congressman Dan Donovan and has gotten in a war words with him recently.  President Trump has endorsed Donovan.  On the Democratic side elsewhere in the Big Apple, Congressman Joe Crowley in the 14th District is being challenged for the first time since 2004 by Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez.  The woman in her twenties was an organizer for Presidential candidate Bernie Sanders and is being backed by progressive groups.  Carolyn Maloney, Eliot Engel, Yvette Clarke and Gregory Meeks all face challenges from within the Democratic Party. In the 19th district in the Catskills and Hudson Valley, seven people are vying for the Democratic bid and the winner will likely challenge Republican Congressman John Faso in the fall.  In Monroe County upstate, four Democrats are running for the 25th District which is vacant now with the recent death of Congresswoman Louise Slaughter. The New York governor's race and other state primaries are taking place in September.
