Welding Fuel Tank Explodes Downtown Causing Some Tense Moments

Part of South Towsend street was closed this morning after reports of an explosion.

Witnesses say they heard a loud boom and saw flames coming form the vehicle around 10 am this morning. Fire officials say a tank of welding fuel in the back of a pick up exploded and caught fire. The fire was put out within minutes and the driver of the pickup and a driver in a car that was nearby got away unhurt. The leak of hazardous materials had caused the street to be closed as crews work to clean up. The area  effected was South Townsend Street near E. Adams Street.

The cause is under investigation.
