Medical Call Results In Meth Bust

Madison County Sheriff's deputies have charged four people after discovering they were operating a meth lab in Smithfield. Deputies originally responded to a residence to assist medical personnel with a report of a man who was bleeding. After they arrived investigators saw items used to manufacture meth.The sheriff's office and the New York State Contaminated Crime Scene Emergency Response Team executed a search warrant and located finished meth and  products used to manufacture the meth.

Arrested were:

  • Donald J. Ciani, 40, of 5370 Peterboro Road, Oneida
  • Mark J. Morey Jr., 34, 6460 State Route 5, Vernon
  • Harold F. Ortman Jr., 35, of 5370 Peterboro Road, Oneida
  • Connie A. Thurston, 37, of 5370 Peterboro Road, Oneida


The four were charged with a variety of drug charges. Ciani, Morey and Ortman were all remanded to the Madison County Jail. Thurston was released on her own recognizance, deputies said.
