Syracuse Police Name Gunman And Officers Involved In Sunday Shootout

Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse Police are naming the man they say brazenly attacked in a hail of gunfire Sunday afternoon. 

Police say that just before 2:15 p.m. Sunday 25-year-old Leon Thomas was acting suspiciously with a gun near West Ostrander Ave and Cannon Street.  Officers confronted him on South Salina Street and as they approached the man he opened fire on police. Officers returned fire, hitting the shooter before he ran away. Police were able to chase him down, recover the gun, and arrest him.

Police say that Sgt. James Milana, Officer Victoria Losurdo, and Officer Travis Rheinheimer were involved. The three have been placed on administrative leave until police have concluded their investigation into the shooting.
