Horse in Oswego County Tests Positive For EEE Virus

A horse in the Oswego County town of Monroe has tested positive for the EEE (Eastern equine encephalitis) virus.

The state lab confirmed the infection and the horse was euthanized September 28.  County health officials say horses are very susceptible to any mosquito-borne illnesses if not vaccinated.  They believe the source of the virus is from the same area where the most recent aerial spraying was done, and test pools continue to find mosquitoes with both EEE and West Nile virus.  Health officials urge the public to remain vigilant and take precautions to limit exposure to mosquitoes until a killing frost eliminates the mosquito's threat.
