Onondaga County Sheriffs Deputies have issued a warning to boaters to use extreme caution while out on local waterways.
Due to the heavy rainfall over the last month, all waterways are at an elevated and hazardous level. The New York State Canal System is running much higher than seasonal levels and continues to remain closed. Along with a fast current, it created a situation where large amounts of dangerous debris such as trees and branches are washed off the shore and into the waterways.
They're often floating unseen below the surface. Deputies say hitting any of that debris can cause damage to your boat, or even wrose, throw someone in the water.
