Auburn Prison Inmate Pleads Guilty On Weapons Charge

An inmate at the Auburn Correctional facility has pleaded guilty to possessing a homeade knife and stabbing another inmate.

Nicholas Cortese was caught with the knife while trying to pass through a metal detector in April of last year. He could get another 2 to 4 years behind bars when he's sentenced.The Cayuga County District Attorney says the arrest highlights a real problem with homemade weapons behind the walls of the prison.

There were 85 inmate on inmate assault last year at the maximum security prison last year alone. The prison houses more than 1,700 dangerous inmates and the homemade weapons pose a danger to other inmate and corrections officers. Cortese was serving a sentence on robbery and assault charges.
