Syracuse Police Make Arrest In Armed Robbery


On Wednesday, March 1st, 2017, at approximately 12:40 PM, Syracuse Police responded to an armed robbery at J&B Grocery, located at 409 Bellevue Ave.  It was reported to Onondaga County 911 that the suspect had threatened the store clerk with a knife and stole property from the store.  The E911 dispatcher provided the responding units with a description of the suspect involved in the robbery.  Upon arriving in the area of the incident, Officer Evan Hepburn located a male who matched the description of the suspect.  The male was identified as Justin Matthews, 28, of 806 Carbon Street, Syracuse.  When located, Matthews was in possession of the knife and the proceeds from the robbery.  Officer Hepburn, along with Officer Daniel Rathbun attempted to take Matthews into custody.  Matthews began to fight with the officers and refused to comply with the officers’ commands.  Police were able to gain control of Matthews and take him into custody.  Matthews was arrested and charged with Robbery in the First Degree, Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the Fourth Degree and Resisting Arrest.  Matthews was lodged at the Onondaga County Justice Center pending this arraignment.
