Tax season is officially underway across America and in New York, and the state Department of Taxation wants to make sure it goes as smoothly as possible for taxpayers.
The state tax office says the smartest thing taxpayers can do is to file their taxes electronically. Those who do are 20 times less likely to make mistakes on returns and receive their refunds faster than those who file by paper.
The state says it's important for those taxpayers who are eligible to make sure they get the Earned Income Tax Credit. They say taxpayers making $64,000 per year or less are eligible to e-file both their federal and state taxes free of charge.
