A man was arrested after leading police on a multi-county chase that ended with a crash into Onondaga Lake on Thursday (April 9). The incident began when Manlius police were conducting a distracted-driving detail in Fayetteville. An officer spotted a man using a cell phone while driving a Ford pickup truck and asked him to pull over. Instead, the man sped off, initiating a chase through Madison, Oswego, and Onondaga counties.
According to WSYR-TV, the pursuit involved multiple police agencies and ended when the driver crashed into Onondaga Lake in Salina. During the chase, the driver reportedly rammed a state trooper vehicle and drove at high speeds, swerving into oncoming traffic.
The driver, who has not been identified, was taken into custody and transported to Upstate University Hospital. Syracuse.com reported that charges are pending against him. The police have not yet disclosed the specific charges he will face.
The chase, which began around 2:18 p.m. on Manlius Center Road, involved at least 10 state police cars and several from other agencies. The incident is still under investigation, and authorities are expected to release more information as it becomes available.
