People Using "Marketplace" Apps Being Robbed On The Northside

Syracuse, N.Y. - Syracuse police are warning people who use marketplace apps such as “Let Go” and “Offer Up” to be careful.

So far this month there have been three robberies, where people thought they were selling an item to someone only to be robbed at gunpoint when the transaction takes place.

Sgt Rick Helterline says the victims are surprised and the robbery takes place very quickly.

Helterline says the victims in each of these incidents listed an item for sale on the app, and then scheduled a meeting with an interested buyer to sell the product. When the victim arrived to sell their items, the suspect forcibly stole the property from them.

Police suggest that people be aware of their surroundings and use caution when meeting with buyers. They also suggested that the meetings be scheduled in well-lit, public places.

So far no injuries have been reported.

Anyone with information or who may have been a victim should contact Syracuse Police  at (315) 442-5222.  All calls will remain confidential.
