State Court of Appeals Will Not Re-Hear Arguments To Keep Columbus Statue

Syracuse, N.Y. - Another setback for those against the removal of the Columbus Monument in downtown Syracuse.

The State Supreme Court of Appeals has denied the Columbus Monument Corporation's motion to reargue or be granted leave to be heard by the Appeals court. This means the City of Syracuse can move ahead with their plan to remove the statue and create what they call a heritage and education site.

Mayor Ben Walsh in a statement said "My goal has always been to create a public place that is welcoming to all and honors Italian American heritage. We will continue on that path following the steps in state and local law and involving the community along the way. I stand committed to working with all parties in creating this public space and preserving history.”
