Manlius, N.Y. - Manlius Police warning residents of a “check washing” scam that's hitting the area.
Police say scammers use special chemicals to remove ink on checks allowing them to then fill out the payee and amount on a check themselves.
Recently Manlius Police caught and arrested a suspect for stealing mail including numerous checks.
Police advise people to avoid mailing checks if you can, use a gel pen when writing them and keep an eye on your bank account.
