Syracuse, N.Y. - Onondaga County Executive Ryan McMahon is proposing a cap on the county’s portion of sales taxes on gas at 16 cents per gallon.
That's the amount collected when the pump price hits $4. That would mean no matter how high the price goes you would only pay 16 cents per gallon in tax.
If the county wanted to remove the 4% tax entirely they would need the state legislature to go along but according to McMahon they don't need their approval to to cap the tax.
The County Legislature though does have to approve the change. The legislature meets again on April 5.
