Albany, N.Y. - Democrats in the state Senate say they're open to making changes to New York's controversial bail reform legislation.
The law went into effect January 1st, eliminating pre-trial detention and cash bail for a large number of non-violent felony and misdemeanor cases. According to Newsday, proposals include the state getting rid of cash bail entirely and giving judges more leeway in deciding who should be held before trial.
Governor Cuomo says he'd support these changes, but Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie has stood behind bail reform as it is now, meaning getting any legislation through that chamber could be tough.
