Cuomo: Flu Is The Main Cncern, Not Coronavirus

Albany, NY) -- Governor Cuomo says there have been no confirmed cases of the coronavirus in New York.

Eleven people have shown signs of the illness, but test results for seven of them came back negative while the other four are still pending. Cuomo says the main concern for state health officials now is the current spike in flu cases.

According to the Department of Health, there were 15-thousand confirmed cases of the virus during the week ending January 25th. That's an 11-percent jump from the week before. The number of people hospitalized due to the flu also increased eight-percent to just over two-thousand

Symptoms of coronavirus are similar to flu. They include fever, cough, shortness of breath and sore throat. Anyone with those issues, who recently traveled to the area of China, should call their doctor.

On Thursday, the World Health Organization declares a global health emergency over the Wuhan coronavirus.

The WHO had resisted the move before since the virus has mostly been limited to China. More than 8,200 people have been infected with the respiratory illness that has killed more than 200 people.
