Student Sit-In Ends At SU, As More Grifitti Is Discovered And Arrest Made

Syracuse, N.Y. - Students at Syracuse University are ending their sit-in, and demanding the firing of four administration and public safety officials.

Students involved in the protests say they want change following the historical mishandling of racial issues by SU. Despite agreeing to most of their demands, with some amendments, students still want the resignation of Chancellor Kent Syverud as well as the the Chief and Assistant Chief to the University's Public Safety Office, and the Senior Vice President for Enrollment and Student Experience.

This week, students made a series of demands and the University responded to them. Students then brought those demands to the chancellor who agreed, yesterday, to most of them with a few amendments. Overnight, Protest organizers say they reject the Chancellor's proposals.

The sit-in is ending as four more instances of racists graffiti or notes were discovered in campus dorms. SU Public Safety officials say two messages disparaging African-Americans was uncovered at Day Hall, a post-it note with anti-Native American language was found on the first floor of Flint Hall, and at the Comstock Art facility graffiti was found targeting Asians.disparaging blacks, Asians, and native-Americans.

Syracuse Police are arresting an 18-year-old woman for creating graffiti in support of protestors. Police say Kym McGowan was given an appearance ticket after using spray paint to create several messages around Bird Library and Irving Garage.
