City Seizes Former Syracuse Developmental Center Site

Syracuse, N.Y. - City leaders in Syracuse are asking for input on what to do with the site of the former Syracuse Developmental Center.

The property was seized yesterday after the city says it ran out of options to recover over $880,000 in back taxes from the owner. The property includes a 628 thousand square-foot building and 47 acres of land.

The building opened in the early 1970s as a home for children and adults with developmental disabilities. It closed in 1998 and has been abandoned since. The property has been stripped of every piece of metal including the pipes and pars of the roof.

Mayor Ben Walsh says the property could be a significant asset for the city. Previous efforts by federal and state officials to redevelop the property haven't been successful.
