Coming Downtown? Its Going Cost Ya!

Syracuse, N.Y. - Parking rates in Syracuse will increase by 60 percent this fall, jumping from $1.25 per hour to $2 per hour.

The Common Council is expected to approve the increase Monday as part of a deal to offset a smaller-than-proposed tax increase in next year’s budget.

At a council study session Wednesday afternoon, no councilors spoke spoke against the increase.

Councilor Tim Rudd, head of the finance committee, suggested the parking rate increase during budget hearings. It was a way to make up for the $600,000 revenue shortfall created when the council lowered Mayor Ben Walsh’s proposed tax hike.

Property taxes will still go up in the city next year, but not as much as initially planned.
