37 New Police Officers And 28 New Firefighters

The City of Syracuse Mayor Ben Walsh, Syracuse Police Chief Frank L. Fowler and Syracuse Fire Chief Michael Monds announce the appointment of 37 new police officers and 28 new firefighters.   The officers and firefighters will be sworn in during a ceremony held on Monday July 9th at 1:00 PM at the Redhouse Arts Center, 400 S. Salina Street, Syracuse N.Y., 13202.

The new police officers will go through a 26 week long police academy, which will include physical fitness training, firearms training, emergency vehicle operations training, first responder/first aid training, and instruction about New York State, Federal and Local Laws related to law enforcement.  At the completion of the police academy, the new officers will then complete a 12 week long Field Training Program, where they will work side-by-side with a veteran officer.

The new firefighters will go through a 16 week long firefighter academy, which will include physical fitness training, hazardous materials training and specialized firefighting/rescue training.  After the completion of the fire academy, the firefighters will begin working with veteran firefighters at various firehouses throughout the City.

These academies are challenging, both physically and mentally, and the new appointees were selected after an intensive background investigation.
