Trump Campaign Says It Will Ban Bloomberg Reporters From All Events

President Donald Trump's 2020 reelection campaign announced that it would no longer provide media credentials to Bloomberg News. The decision was made after the news outlet said they would not cover the organization's owner, Michael Bloomberg, or other candidates currently running in the 2020 Democratic presidential primary. Bloomberg announced in November that he was joining the crowded field, hoping to replace President Trump.

After Bloomberg announced his candidacy, Bloomberg News Editor-in-Chief John Micklethwait issued a memo to staffers telling them that they would not be allowed to investigate any of the Democratic candidates.

"We will continue our tradition of not investigating Mike (and his family and foundation) and we will extend the same policy to his rivals in the Democratic primaries," Micklethwait wrote. "We cannot treat Mike’s Democratic competitors differently from him."

He said that the policy does not apply to President Trump or his administration because they are "the government of the day."

The Trump campaign blasted the decision, accusing the outlet of having a bias against the president.

“The decision by Bloomberg News to formalize preferential reporting policies is troubling and wrong,” Brad Parscale, Trump's campaign manager, said. "Bloomberg News has declared that they won’t investigate their boss or his Democrat competitors, many of whom are current holders of high office, but will continue critical reporting on President Trump.”

Micklethwait pushed back against claims that Bloomberg News is biased, and promised to continue their coverage of President Trump despite the restrictions.

"We have covered Donald Trump fairly and in an unbiased way since he became a candidate in 2015 and will continue to do so despite the restrictions imposed by the Trump campaign," he said.
