Deal With Police Union Would Require New Officers To Live In Syracuse

Syracuse, N.Y. - New cops signing on to the Syracuse Police Department will soon be required to live in the City for their first five years on the job.

It is part of the deal reached between the Mayor and the Police Union President. The tentative four-and-a-half year contract was signed yesterday. If approved, it will be similar to an agreement that the City made with Firefighters back in 2016.

Starting with the next academy class, new officers will have six months from graduation to provide proof of city residency to city hall. Officers who transfer from other departments are exempt.

Police Officers will also be given a retroactive pay raise for 2018. Raises will continue through 2022. A big pay bump is also coming for officers with rank and longevity.
