Memorial Day Weekend Travel Guide

If you'll be traveling for the holiday weekend, you won't be alone.

AAA expects nearly 43 million Americans will travel at least 50 miles. Of those, 37.6 million will travel by car, that would be a record for the holiday and a 3.5% increase over last year.

Here are some things to keep in mind while out on the road

Fill Your Tank In CNY

You will need to leave the state in order to find cheaper gas than what we are paying here in Central New York. According to Triple A, the average cost for a gallon of regular gas in Central New York is $2.86. That's the same as it was last week and is 19 cents cheaper than this time a year ago. The state average is $2.95 and nationally it's $2.85.

Road, Bridge Construction For Holiday Weekend

Governor Cuomo is making it easier for folks to get to their Memorial Day weekend destinations. His office says starting at six this morning, temporary lane closures for road and bridge construction projects will be suspended. That order will be in effect until six a.m. Tuesday. Officials are also reminding New Yorkers to follow the state's Move Over Law and to avoid drunk or distracted driving. The Thruway Authority says drivers looking for updated traffic information can download the agency's mobile app.

Safety Tips For Ride Sharing Services

Ride sharing will be a popular travel option this weekend, and Triple A has issued some safety tips. The agency suggests confirming who your driver is before getting in their vehicle. They also say you shouldn't share personal information with your driver like where you live or work. Finally, if you see any suspicious activity or feel unsafe, get out of the vehicle and call 911 right away.
