He specifically mentioned a federal audit that found Maine made $45.6 million in improper Medicaid payments for services provided to children with autism. Vance blamed Maine's Democratic Governor Janet Mills for the alleged fraud and praised former Governor Paul LePage as a potential ally in the anti-fraud effort.

The visit comes as Maine residents prepare for their primary elections on June 9, where candidates for governor, the U.S. Senate, and the U.S. House will be selected. Vance's appearance also coincides with ongoing political tensions, as Mills accused the Trump administration of targeting states that oppose President Trump. Meanwhile, LePage, who is vying for a congressional seat, expressed his commitment to working with the administration to address fraud.

Vance's remarks drew protests from local progressive groups, with Maine Secretary of State Shenna Bellows among those speaking out against his visit. Despite the controversy, Vance reiterated the administration's resolve to uncover and address fraud, stating, "I suspect we're going to find hundreds of millions more dollars every single month that we look in the state of Maine."

According to the Associated Press, Vance's visit to Maine is part of a broader effort to highlight the administration's anti-fraud initiatives ahead of the upcoming elections. The administration has accused Maine and several other Democratic states of mismanaging federally funded Medicaid programs.
