Syracuse's City Auditor, Alexander Marion, is advocating for a new bill to enhance cyclist safety by updating the city's traffic code. The proposed legislation would introduce a specific violation for blocking bicycle lanes, which is currently not recognized as a standalone offense. Vehicles parked in bike lanes are presently ticketed for other infractions, such as parking in a no-standing zone.
According to Syracuse.com, the new violation aims to address safety concerns for cyclists, particularly in Downtown Syracuse, where bike lanes are often used as unofficial loading zones. This misuse forces cyclists to navigate sidewalks or merge into car traffic, increasing the risk of accidents.
The initiative follows recommendations from two reports by Marion, titled "Park at Your Own Risk" and "Incomplete Streets," which highlight the need for better protection of bike lanes. WSYR-TV reports that the city has been expanding its bike infrastructure, making this legislation a timely measure to ensure the safety of its growing cycling community.
Common Councilor Corey Williams has introduced the legislation, supporting Marion's efforts to create a safer environment for cyclists. The proposal is expected to be reviewed by lawmakers soon.
