Syracuse University has appointed Regy Thorpe as the new head coach for its women's lacrosse team. Thorpe, a former All-American defenseman and Syracuse alumnus, will be the fourth head coach in the program's history. He replaces Kayla Treanor, who recently left to become the head coach at Penn State.
Thorpe's connection to Syracuse runs deep. He was an assistant coach for the women's team from 2010 to 2019, helping lead the Orange to nine NCAA tournament appearances, including six Final Fours. Thorpe expressed his excitement about returning to Syracuse, calling it his "dream job."
Before returning to Syracuse, Thorpe spent the last four years as an assistant coach at the University of Florida, where he was promoted to associate head coach in 2024. Under his guidance, Florida's defense ranked among the top in the nation, and the team reached the Final Four in the past two seasons.
Syracuse Director of Athletics John Wildhack praised Thorpe's championship-caliber coaching and his deep ties to the Syracuse and Central New York communities. Wildhack said, "Regy is the right person to lead our program" and emphasized Thorpe's experience and passion for mentoring.
Thorpe's appointment marks a new chapter for Syracuse women's lacrosse, following a challenging season under Treanor, where the team finished with a 10-9 record. Thorpe's extensive experience and strong connection to the university are expected to bring renewed success to the program.
