A tragic accident in Pompey claimed the life of 15-year-old Gavin Myers and left his 17-year-old sister, Gia Myers, in critical condition. The crash occurred on Thursday (January 30) when Gia, driving a 2010 Hyundai Accent, lost control on a snow-covered Route 91. The vehicle veered into the opposite lane, colliding with a 2022 Chevy Tahoe driven by Krystal L. Behnke, 37, of Fabius. Gavin was pronounced dead at the scene, while Gia was transported to Upstate Medical Center for treatment.
Both siblings were students in the Fabius-Pompey School District. In response to the tragedy, the district has canceled all after-school activities and is providing support and counseling to students and staff. Dr. Lloyd L. Peck, the district's superintendent, expressed deep sorrow over the loss and emphasized the importance of addressing students' grief.
The New York State Police are focusing their investigation on the snowy road conditions at the time of the crash. Gia Myers, who remains hospitalized, is remembered by her community for her aspirations to become a teacher and superintendent. The school district continues to offer resources to help students cope with the loss of their classmate.
The crash has deeply affected the close-knit community, with many rallying to support the Myers family during this difficult time. The condition of the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash has not been confirmed.
