The Syracuse Police Department is seeking public feedback on a proposed plan to use drones for emergency response. Under an executive order by Mayor Ben Walsh, the "Drones as a First Response Program" aims to reduce response times, improve situational awareness for officers, and enhance community safety. The drones would be deployed in response to 911 calls and incidents reported by officers, including shots-fired calls, search and rescue situations, burglaries, and other high-priority incidents.

The initiative, however, will not use drones proactively to scan for criminal activity. Instead, the focus is on providing "eyes on a scene" more quickly to assess situations and provide vital information before officers arrive.

Residents of Syracuse can submit their comments on the proposed technology until February 13 by filling out an online survey. The feedback process is part of a 2020 executive order signed by Mayor Walsh, which mandates community input on surveillance technology to ensure it is used safely and effectively.

The city's Surveillance Technology Working Group, which includes city staff, community advocates, and technology experts, is overseeing the public comment process. For more information or to submit feedback, residents can visit the city's website.
