Seven people were hospitalized following a fire at a home on Grant Boulevard in Syracuse on Wednesday (January 22). The blaze, which started in the attic of the two-and-a-half-story wood-frame house, was reported around 7:10 p.m. Firefighters arrived to find flames visible from multiple attic windows, according to the Syracuse Fire Department.

All 11 occupants of the home managed to evacuate before the fire crews arrived. Seven individuals were transported to Upstate University Hospital for treatment of smoke inhalation. The fire was extinguished in approximately 30 minutes, with no injuries reported among firefighters.

The fire originated between the ceiling of the second floor and the attic floor, and was caused by an electrical malfunction, as stated by Capt. Phillip Vogt, a spokesperson for the Syracuse Fire Department. The incident has displaced all 11 residents, who are receiving assistance from the American Red Cross.

Syracuse.com reported that the house sustained significant smoke, water, and fire damage, particularly in the attic and second floor.
