Governor Kathy Hochul and Congressman John Mannion have expressed confidence in the continuation of the Interstate 81 project in Syracuse, New York, despite a recent executive order from President-elect Donald Trump. The order, signed on Monday (January 20), pauses the disbursement of funds from the Inflation Reduction Act and the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act, which partially fund the I-81 project.
The project, crucial for Syracuse's infrastructure, received a $180 million grant from the Inflation Reduction Act and additional support from the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law. Governor Hochul assured that the project will proceed, emphasizing her commitment to work with Congress to ensure grant commitments are honored. A spokesperson for Hochul stated that the pause is likely intended for NEVI/EV programs, not the I-81 project.
Congressman Mannion echoed this sentiment, stating to WSYR-TV, "We don’t believe that there’s any risk to the project at all." He acknowledged the recent chaos of executive orders but remained confident in the project's progress.
The I-81 project is part of a broader effort to modernize New York's infrastructure, with recent successful projects like the $3.5 million rehabilitation of the I-81 bridge over East Colvin Street, which was completed under budget. This project, supported by the Bipartisan Infrastructure Law, enhances safety and connectivity in Syracuse.
Governor Hochul and Congressman Mannion are determined to navigate any challenges posed by the executive order to ensure the I-81 project continues as planned.
