An inmate at Marcy Correctional Facility in Oneida County, New York, died following a use-of-force incident involving prison staff. The incident occurred on Monday (December 9), and the inmate was taken to a hospital where they died the next day. The New York State Department of Corrections and Community Supervision (DOCCS) has placed all staff involved on administrative leave pending an investigation.

According to a statement from DOCCS Commissioner Daniel Martuscello III, the department's Office of Special Investigations is conducting an internal investigation. The New York State Police and the Attorney General's Office have also been notified, as state law requires the AG's office to investigate deaths resulting from actions by peace officers, including corrections officers.

Martuscello emphasized the department's commitment to safety, stating, "There is no place for, and I will not tolerate, violence in our correctional facilities." The medium-security Marcy Correctional Facility, located about seven miles west of Utica, housed 846 inmates as of December 1.

The incident has drawn attention to the protocols and safety measures within the facility, with further details expected as the investigation progresses.
