JMA Wireless is set to expand its operations in Central New York with a nearly $44 million federal grant from the CHIPS and Science Act. Announced by Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer, this funding will help JMA increase its research and manufacturing capabilities in Syracuse, initially creating 30 new jobs. The company is the only American-owned manufacturer of wireless communication equipment used by major carriers like AT&T and Verizon.

The grant will support JMA in developing 5G Open Radio Access Network (O-RAN)-compliant radio units and upgrading its 5G manufacturing facilities. Schumer emphasized the importance of this investment, stating it would help maintain America's 5G leadership and reduce reliance on foreign technology, particularly from companies like Huawei, which he has criticized for national security concerns.

Schumer explained that JMA will combine this federal funding with $30 million in private investment, totaling over $75 million to enhance their Central New York operations. This expansion aligns with the "Buy America" standards included in the Bipartisan Infrastructure Investment & Jobs Law, aiming to boost American manufacturing and secure the future of high-speed networks in the U.S.

The investment is expected to position Syracuse as a hub for technology manufacturing and innovation, with JMA leading the way in producing advanced 5G technology. The company's CEO, John Mezzalingua, highlighted the significance of this grant in bringing high-tech manufacturing jobs to upstate New York and securing the U.S. position as a leader in wireless technology.
