Kevin Ryan has been nominated by the Onondaga County Republican Committee to serve as the new elections commissioner, replacing Michele Sardo, who has held the position since 2017. Ryan, currently a deputy county attorney, was chosen over former Liverpool trustee Christina Fadden. The nomination comes after Sardo was not reappointed due to concerns about the Board of Elections' performance, including issues with voter registration documents that led the state Board of Elections to intervene by sending nine full-time workers to Syracuse.

The county legislature must confirm Ryan's appointment, with the decision expected later this month. If confirmed, Ryan will begin his term on January 1, 2025. The position offers an annual salary of $99,973. The selection process was unusual as Sardo had initially been approved for another term by the committee in September, but the legislature did not follow through with her reappointment.

The committee's decision was made over the weekend, and the nomination will now proceed to the legislature for certification.
