Garrett Cooper's 2-run HR in 9th sends Marlins over Mets 3-1

The Mets got a good start from Joey Lucchesi, but the bats stayed quiet as the Miami Marlins walked off with a 3-1 win on Saturday.

- In desperate need of pitching length after Friday night’s 12-inning game, the Mets turned to Joey Lucchesi to make the start, and he got off to a great start. Featuring a nasty “churve,” Lucchesi struck out five of the first six hitters that he faced. He then helped himself out defensively in the third, starting a 1-6-3 double play on a bunt attempt.

- Lucchesi rolled through four innings, allowing just one hit while striking out eight. But somewhat surprisingly, his day came to an end their, as he was pulled for pinch-hitter Patrick Mazeika in the top of the fifth. He threw just 43 pitches, 34 of which were strikes.

- Looking to get off to a quick start like they did Friday night, the Mets loaded the bases against Pablo Lopez in the first inning, thanks in part to a pair of softly hit singles from Francisco Lindor and Tomas Nido. But Wilfredo Tovar was set down on strikes to end the inning and leave the bases loaded.

-Sean Reid-Foley was first out of the bullpen for the Mets, and he got into an early jam in the bottom of the fifth, as a Garrett Cooper liner deflected off Dominic Smith for a double to give Miami runners on second and third. The Marlins eventually loaded the bases, but Lopez stared at strike three on a full-count pitch to end the inning.

- Reid-Foley pitched into the bottom of the seventh, but a single by Brian Anderson and a shift-beating grounder from Cooper gave the Marlins runners at the corners with one out. Luis Rojas then went to Aaron Loup, who allowed pinch-hitter Corey Dickerson to loft a flyball out to left.Cameron Maybin made the catch and threw a bullet home, but Nido lost control of the ball at the very end of his tag, and Anderson was safe with the game's first run.

- Trailing by a run in the eighth, the Mets put two men on base as Jose Peraza and Lindor both worked walks off of Anthony Bass, marking the first time since the first inning that the Mets had multiple men on base in the same inning. With Smith coming up, the Marlins turned to lefty Richard BleierAfter a would-be strike three was instead called a ball, Smith delivered with an RBI single to tie the game, and the Marlins were none too happy.

- The game stayed tied into the ninth inning, thanks in part to Smith making a fantastic diving stop and throw at first base. In the bottom of the ninth, Johneshwy Fargas made one of the best catches of the year for the Mets, diving to rob Jesus Aguilar of extra bases as the ball snow-coned in his glove. Later in the inning, though, Drew Smith hung a 3-2 breaking ball, and Cooper launched it out to left-center to give Miami the win.

The injury-plagued Mets totaled five hits and have 13 in 21 innings in the series.

“We couldn’t get any momentum," manager Luis Rojas said. “We didn’t get a ball over the fence today. We’re that kind of team right now. We’re fast; we’ve got to create things.”

Mets Fall to 21-18 and look for a series win on Sunday to close the road trip.
