Cicero, N.Y. - An Onondaga County Sheriff’s Deputy narrowly avoided serious injury after two crashes minutes apart on I-81 in Cicero this morning sent two people to the Hospital.

The first crash happened before 2:20 a.m. this morning. A Deputy was sent out to investigate a car that had driven into the guardrail near the Route 31 exit. The driver ran off before the deputy got there.

While out of their vehicle investigating the first crash a Chevrolet Equinox slammed into the Deputy's patrol car. Deputies say that the damage to the two vehicles is significant and that the driver and passenger in the Chevy were taken to the hospital.

The Deputy is okay. Investigators are working to track down the driver involved in the first crash.

All southbound lanes on I-81 near exit 30 remain closed.
