State Lawmakers Call For Extension Of Child Victims Act Window

Albany, N.Y. - State lawmakers are pushing for child sexual abuse survivors to have more time to hold those who allegedly abused them responsible for their actions.

Last year, a window opened for survivors, allowing them to take civil action against their abusers and the institutions that employed them, regardless of their age. Some lawmakers say that window should be extended until August 2021 since some victims still haven't had time to process their trauma and come forward, while others can't find a lawyer willing to take their case.

Most of the nearly 15,000 lawsuits filed under the Child Victims Act in recent months have targeted organizations like the Boy Scouts of America or Catholic Church.
